Cloud computing is a trap, warns GNU founder
-
I alluded to this in one of the reasons why I like Dropbox. Some people seem to have a skewed view of cloud computing. Far from removing you from the grip of a software company, cloud computing ties you into their solution even tighter.
If you use Microsoft Office to edit a document, chances are other solutions offer Office converters to enable to enable you to open your doc in their solution.
If your doc is stored in the “cloud”, by which we mean it’s hosted by, say, Google, there’s no way a solution from another company is going to be able to access it.
If you use Google Docs heavily and have a lot of collateral stored there, you are pretty much at their mercy should they decide to start charging for the service.
