Now the BBC Trust are trying to drag Chris Moyles into the issue by saying Russell should not have discussed the Andrew Sachs phone calls on Chris’ show. I wondered how long it would be before his name cropped up. There seems to be a BBC witch hunt at the moment against anybody who offers entertainment that doesn’t fit in with the BBC’s guidelines. It’s in danger of delivering very dull, bland entertainment shows instead of cutting edge entertainment and/or intellectual programming that it so desperately needs to do in order to still be here in 10 years time.

I have to agree with the words of the chairman of the Trust, Sir Michael Lyons:

Pressed further on the issue, he said it was a “fundamental constitutional position” that the trust could not direct the BBC to hire or fire its presenters.

“There is a slippery slope in responding to pressure. Where does it end? It starts with comedians, and it ends with making judgements about who presents the news,” he said.

Everybody agrees that it was a mistake, but the Mail “newspaper” and the BBC have blown it out of all proportion. The BBC has shot itself in the foot – which seems to be happening a lot at the moment. It really needs to pull itself together and get back to the task of entertaining the people who pay for it.
